Tablet 203: From 'Abdu'l-Bahá for the Martyrs of Nayriz

Provisional Translation

  • He is God!
  • May the light emanating
  • and the glory radiating from the Sun of Truth,
  • which bestows grace from the Abha Kingdom,
  • rest upon you!
  • O martyrs and manifestations of the Love of God,
  • O noble and pious ones,
  • Verily, you were sacrificed in the Path of God.
  • I testify that you are signs of guidance
  • and the embodiment of words of virtue
  • and stars made manifest on the Supreme Horizon
  • and resplendent lights
  • reflected in the realm of the Most Exalted Example
  • and tall trees in the heavenly paradise
  • and birds warbling in the Garden of Sacrifice
  • and lions roaring in the groves of loyalty
  • and fish swimming in the pools of the Most Glorious Heaven.
  • Blessed are ye for as soon as you heard the call
  • you responded with prayer,
  • took sanctuary in the Most Peaceful Refuge,
  • called upon your Supreme Lord,
  • frequented the friends
  • and hated not the enemies.
  • You strengthened your loins in obedience to the Manifest Lord
  • and rose to serve the Cause of God with hearts overflowing with joy.
  • You fulfilled your pledges to your Cherished Lord
  • with utter submissiveness and humility
  • with tearful and prayerful hearts
  • to the point that your voice was heard
  • and your fame was spread throughout the world.
  • Your hearts were filled with assurance
  • through the confirmations of the Lord of Splendor.
  • Your souls, attracted to the Glorious Beauty
  • desired to be at that Hallowed Place of Martyrdom.
  • Eagerly yearning to behold your Lord,
  • you took hold of His mantle and said:
  • Destine for us,O our Lord, the cup
  • overflowing with the wine of martyrdom.
  • Intoxicate us with that pure wine
  • and honor us with that immense bounty
  • while we are injured by the arrows
  • and fallen on the ground
  • our blood is shed
  • and our bodies are cut to pieces.
  • So, the Lord of the Lofty Heavens destined for you
  • the achievement of salvation, grace and bliss
  • and allowed you to attain the greatest hope.
  • Consequently the jealous and hostile crowd
  • assaulted you in a multi-pronged attack.
  • This ruthless mass scattered you,
  • murdering and plundering,
  • using their own hands to seize and rend asunder
  • your hearts and organs.
  • They shot their arrows at you,
  • aimed their bayonets at you
  • and shed your blood.
  • They feared not their Lord, the Unconstrained,
  • the Avenger and the Almighty.
  • O, radiant lights,
  • glimmering moons,
  • clear and comprehensible suns!
  • I know not how to mention
  • your immense calamity
  • nor how to lament
  • and explain the mystery
  • of thy great suffering.
  • Verily, eyes are shedding tears
  • hearts are broken with intense pain
  • and souls are certainly sorrowful
  • as the greatest of disasters hath struck you.
  • Thus, in this great calamity
  • hearts are aflame, tears are flowing.
  • Verily patience hath ended.
  • May my soul be a sacrifice for you
  • May my being be offered up for you.
  • My soul has yearned for death in this calamity,
  • however, you have received that excellent chalice,
  • have achieved nearness to the Divine Mercy,
  • have found a place for retreat
  • under the far stretched celestial shadow,
  • have obtained such a lofty station,
  • have attained the presence of the Loving Lord
  • and ascended into the Orb of Effulgence
  • shining bright with the Light of the Glorious Beauty,
  • intoxicated with the Wine of Union
  • and realized eternal life that hath no parallel.
  • I beg God to make your blood
  • a cause of propagation of the scriptures of God,
  • the manifestation of divine mysteries,
  • the diffusion of His light in other countries,
  • to bless whosoever makes a pilgrimage,
  • whosoever visits the pure dust of your remains,
  • whosoever breathes the fragrant sacred perfume
  • of your sweet smelling tombs,
  • whether those who have gone before
  • or those who will come in the hereafter.
  • O God! My God!
  • Destine for me this lofty station.
  • Bestow upon me that brilliant cup.
  • Give me to drink from the pure wine
  • of that glorious martyrdom,
  • the wine that is sweeter
  • and more delicious than Tasnim and Salsabil:
  • O divine wine of the Remembrance of God.
  • Allow me to join those martyrs
  • and deprive me not of Thy favors
  • except for such as those who are nigh unto thee
  • from amongst the noble ones.
  • Verily, thou art the Bounteous
  • and verily thou art the Possessor of Boundless Grace.
  • 'Abdu’l-Bahá
  • Some blessed souls should recite this tablet with utmost resignation and humility at the resting place of the martyrs, on behalf of 'Abdu’l-Bahá.
  • 'Abdu’l-Bahá
